Category 2 (Cat 2) – conventional shell-type industrial steam boilers and coil-type steam generators.
A ‘hands-on’ opportunity to work with a functioning boiler in-situ, leading to the only formally recognised boiler operator qualification
– typically lasts four days.
Developed via a collaboration between the Combustion Engineering Association, The Carbon Trust, HSE and the insurance industry.
The course aids attendees in satisfying BG01 ‘Guidance on Safe Operation of Boilers’ recommendations, with operators advised to attain ‘Certified Industrial Boiler Operator’ status (Cert.IBO) and managers ‘Diploma in Boiler Plant Operation Management’ (Dip.BOM), respectively.

All successful candidates receive a free 1-year membership to the Combustion Engineering Association (CEA).

This comprehensive course covers general boiler operation and maintenance in depth, as well as boiler efficiency, environmental awareness and further legislation.
Byworth’s status as a boiler manufacturer allows attendees to experience a fully operational steam boiler in a working environment – a unique advantage over any other UK training facility.
They can also witness a boiler at every stage of its creation, from design to realisation, giving further invaluable insight into the processes involved in boiler construction.
Live technology demonstrations and classroom based theory tuition further supplement delegate understanding of everything from basic system operation to health and safety.
- 2. Assessment MethodMore
Formal examination under study conditions and independent assessment by representatives of GasTec. Upon successful graduation, candidates are eligible to add the designation ‘Certified Industrial Boiler Operative’ (Cert.IBO) or managers ‘Diploma in Boiler Plant Operation Management’ (Dip.BOM).
Candidates must provide an evidence pack to demonstrate a minimum of 6 months experience working with steam boilers.
