IPAF Training for Safe MEWP Operation

Posted January 21st 2025

Training

At the end of 2024, our newest recruits were the latest team members to successfully attend and complete their IPAF Training to safely use and operate mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) training is essential for anyone who operates MEWPs. It provides the necessary knowledge and skills to work safely and efficiently, while also ensuring compliance with all relevant legal requirements. By investing in IPAF training, we are creating a safer working environment, reducing the risk of accidents, and improving overall productivity.

Why is this training important?

Due to the nature of our business and the size of the products we manufacture, our teams are frequently working at various heights and locations across the site. To do this safely we use Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).

MEWPs, commonly known as cherry pickers or scissor lifts, are essential tools in our industry and many others. However, operating these machines requires specialised skills and a thorough understanding of safety protocols to prevent accidents.

Legal Requirements in the UK

In the UK, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 dictate that employers must ensure the safety of employees working at height. This includes providing adequate training, equipment, and supervision.

IPAF Training

IPAF training courses cover a wide range of topics that ensure candidates are properly trained to become competent operators of MEWPs. Course content is delivered in two key sessions, the first covering theory and legalities, the second being a practical session in which candidates are required to prove their abilities and pass the IPAF assessment.

Theory

The theory component covers:

Legislation and regulations - Relevant UK and international safety standards and regulations.

MEWP types and classifications - Understanding the different types of MEWPs as well as understanding which are applicable to the candidates job role.

Pre-use inspections - Conducting thorough pre-use inspections to identify any potential hazards and ensure the machine is safe to use.

Risk assessment and planning - Identifying and mitigating risks associated with MEWP operation.

Safe operating procedures - Correct operating techniques, including travel, lifting, and manoeuvring.

Emergency procedures - Responding to emergencies such as equipment malfunctions or accidents, including manual decent procedures.

Practical

Upon completion of the theory based elements of other course the candidates progress to the practical learning.

PPE – First things first, the candidates learn how to correctly wear their safety harnesses as well as they types of harness required for the circumstance.

Safe access - Practicing safe entry and exit from the work platform.

Hands-on operation - Practical training on the specific type of MEWP being operated.

Control familiarisation - Learning to operate all controls safely and effectively.

Working at height - Performing tasks safely while working from the elevated platform, and manoeuvring the machine as required.

At the end of the practical session the candidates are assessed by a qualified IPAF representative in line with the IPAF practical test standards.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates are be required to have a level of literacy that enables them to fully understand safety notices and manufacturer’s instruction manuals.

Candidates, also need to be physically fit, in good health and should not have problems with eyesight or hearing as the course involves the operating of MEWPs.
